A Budget-Friendly Red Dot That Delivers

The Hi-Lux TD-3C Red Dot Sight, produced by Hi-Lux Optics, is an affordable pistol red-dot optic designed for shooters who want reliable performance without paying premium prices.

With an MSRP of $219, the TD-3C offers many of the features typically found in more expensive pistol dots. Reviewer Jack Oller describes it as a surprisingly capable optic that performs well beyond its price category.

Hi-Lux has a reputation among firearms enthusiasts for producing both modern optics and replicas of historical military scopes, including early Malcolm scopes and Vietnam-era sniper optics. The TD-3C represents the company’s modern approach to pistol red dots.

Durable Aluminum Housing

The TD-3C uses a 7075-series aluminum housing, the same type of material commonly used in high-end firearm optics.

Key design features include:

  • All-metal construction
  • Lightweight design (2 ounces)
  • Compact dimensions
  • RMR mounting footprint

Because it uses the Trijicon RMR footprint, the TD-3C can mount easily to many optics-ready pistols or adapter plates.

The optic also includes a Picatinny rail adapter, allowing it to be mounted on rifles or shotguns as well.

Long Runtime With Smart Power Management

One standout feature of the TD-3C is its impressive battery life.

The optic runs on a CR2032 battery that installs from the side of the optic, meaning the sight does not need to be removed from the firearm for battery changes.

Battery performance includes:

  • Up to 50,000 hours of runtime
  • Sleep mode after 3 minutes of inactivity
  • Auto shutoff after 4 hours

These features help extend battery life while preventing accidental battery drain if the sight is left on.

Unique Oval-Shaped Lens

Unlike many pistol red dots that use a square or circular window, the TD-3C features an oval-shaped objective lens.

Although it may appear smaller at first glance, the design actually provides a comfortable and usable field of view.

The shape helps shooters quickly locate the dot when presenting the pistol and makes target transitions smoother during rapid shooting drills.

Dot or Circle-Dot Configuration

The TD-3C includes two reticle choices that can be toggled by the user:

  • 3-MOA dot
  • Segmented circle-dot reticle

Many shooters prefer a simple dot for precision, but the circle-dot configuration can make target acquisition faster in close-range defensive scenarios.

Brightness controls are located on the left side of the optic and provide tactile feedback when pressed.

Real-World Testing Performance

During testing, the TD-3C was mounted on a Shadow Systems DR920 pistol, where its compact design kept the optic mounted low on the slide.

The optic performed well during:

  • Range shooting drills
  • Rapid target transitions
  • Room-clearing training

Testing also took place at Gunsite Academy, where the optic handled bright sunlight conditions without issues.

The reviewer also noted that the optic would work well on shotguns, particularly for turkey hunting, thanks to its included Picatinny mount.

Built to Handle Recoil and Weather

One concern shooters often have with red dots is durability, especially when mounted on shotguns.

However, optics designed for pistols already endure extreme forces from the slide movement of semi-automatic handguns. In fact, the slide movement of a compact pistol can produce forces approaching 9,000 Gs, which is often harsher than shotgun recoil.

Additional durability features include:

  • Waterproof rating (submersible to 1 meter)
  • Dust and debris resistance
  • Easy cleaning after exposure to dirt or mud

This makes the TD-3C suitable for range use, home defense, and hunting environments.

Clear Dot Even in Bright Sunlight

Visibility is one of the most important aspects of a red-dot sight.

During testing in the Arizona midday sun, the TD-3C’s dot remained:

  • Bright
  • Clean
  • Crisp across all brightness settings

The two lowest brightness levels are also intended to be night-vision compatible, though that feature was not tested in the review.

A Solid Entry-Level Pistol Dot

The Hi-Lux TD-3C Red Dot Sight offers an impressive combination of affordability, durability, and practical features.

While it lacks some advanced features found on high-end optics—such as automatic brightness adjustment—it still delivers the essentials that matter most:

  • Long battery life
  • Durable aluminum construction
  • Flexible mounting options
  • Clear aiming dot

For shooters who want to try a pistol red dot without spending $400–$600, the TD-3C represents an excellent entry point. It’s suitable for training, home defense, hunting shotguns, and general range use while staying well within a modest budget.
