Review: Nightforce NX8 2.5–20×50 Long-Range Scope

A Versatile Precision Optic

The Nightforce NX8 2.5-20x50mm F1 is designed to be a true “do-it-all” riflescope. It combines a wide magnification range with a compact form factor, making it suitable for tactical shooting, long-range precision, and even hunting.

Produced by Nightforce Optics, the NX8 line was first introduced at the SHOT Show 2019 in Las Vegas. The series was developed as a modernized evolution of the well-known Nightforce NXS Rifle Scope Series, a rugged optic widely used by military snipers, hunters, and competitive shooters.

The NX8 maintains the durability that Nightforce is known for but adds improvements like broader magnification ranges and updated optical design.

Compact Size with High Magnification

One of the most striking characteristics of the Nightforce NX8 2.5-20x50mm F1 is its compact size. Despite offering up to 20× magnification, the scope measures only 12 inches long, which is shorter than many scopes with much lower magnification.

Specifications include:

  • Magnification: 2.5× – 20×
  • Objective Lens: 50 mm
  • Length: 12 inches
  • Weight: 28.6 ounces

For comparison, this makes it roughly similar in length to the Nightforce SHV 3-10x42, despite offering nearly double the maximum magnification.

The scope also ships with useful accessories:

  • Tenebraex flip-up lens covers
  • A magnification throw lever
  • A Nightforce multi-tool for zero-stop adjustments

These accessories add value since many optics require them to be purchased separately.

ED Glass and Low-Light Clarity

The NX8 uses Extra-Low Dispersion (ED) glass, which improves resolution, color fidelity, and light transmission.

Performance highlights:

  • Sharp image clarity at high magnification
  • Strong light transmission at dusk and dawn
  • Minimal chromatic aberration

Clarity becomes especially noticeable above 10× magnification, where the ED glass delivers strong detail and contrast.

While it may not quite reach the optical performance of the premium Nightforce BEAST 5-25x56, it comes very close to the high-end Nightforce ATACR Rifle Scope Series.

First Focal Plane Precision

The NX8 uses a First Focal Plane (FFP) reticle. In FFP scopes, the reticle scales with magnification, meaning the holdover marks remain accurate at any zoom level.

The tested model used the MOAR reticle, one of Nightforce’s most popular designs.

Advantages of the MOAR reticle include:

  • Clear elevation and windage markings
  • A precise center aiming point
  • Easy holdover calculations

Turret adjustments are matched to the reticle with ¼ MOA click increments, and the scope offers a large adjustment range:

  • 110 MOA elevation
  • 80 MOA windage

This makes it suitable for long-range precision shooting and PRS competition.

Performance Across Multiple Rifles

Testing was conducted on several rifles, including:

  • A Christensen Mesa Long Range Rifle chambered in 300 Winchester Magnum
  • Rifles chambered in 308 Winchester
  • Rifles chambered in 223 Remington

The NX8 tracked reliably during adjustments, maintaining accurate point-of-impact shifts with no noticeable deviation.

Nightforce scopes are known for precise turret clicks, and the NX8 maintained that reputation. Adjustments felt solid and tactile with no mushy feedback.

Even when mounted on hard-recoiling rifles, the optic showed no signs of mechanical or optical issues.

Compact Power and Versatility

Several strengths stand out with the NX8: The 2.5× to 20× range allows the scope to handle both close-range and long-distance shooting.

Compact Design

At only 12 inches long, it is significantly shorter than most scopes with similar magnification.

Multi-Purpose Use

The NX8 works well for:

  • Tactical rifles
  • AR-pattern rifles
  • Long-range bolt guns
  • Hunting rifles

Strong Durability

Nightforce optics are famous for their rugged construction, and the NX8 maintains that reputation.

Minor Design Limitations

Although the NX8 performs well overall, there are a few drawbacks. The windage and elevation housing is positioned farther forward than on most scopes. This can create mounting challenges on long-action rifles, where space for scope rings may be limited.

Push-Button Illumination

Unlike older Nightforce optics that used a tactile dial system, the NX8 uses a push-button illumination control.

While visually sleek, some shooters prefer the older dial-based adjustment system.

High Performance for the Cost

The Nightforce NX8 2.5-20x50mm F1 has an MSRP of around $1,950.

For a scope with:

  • ED glass
  • First focal plane reticle
  • Large adjustment range
  • Rugged construction

…it offers strong value within the premium optics market.

One of the Most Versatile Optics Available

The Nightforce NX8 2.5-20x50mm F1 delivers an excellent combination of compact size, wide magnification range, and durability.

It works equally well for:

  • Precision rifle competitions
  • Tactical applications
  • Long-range hunting

While there are minor design compromises, the NX8 performs well enough that it could realistically serve as a single optic for multiple rifles and shooting roles.

For shooters looking for a premium but versatile scope under $2,000, the NX8 stands out as one of the strongest options available.
