POF P-15 BASE Rifle Review

A Changing AR-15 Market

The AR-15 market has changed dramatically over the past two decades. During the early 2000s, only a handful of companies were producing AR-15 rifles, with Colt's Manufacturing Company dominating military and law-enforcement contracts.

Many newer manufacturers entered the market during that period, attempting to distinguish themselves through improved designs and innovative features. One of those companies was Patriot Ordnance Factory, founded in 2002.

The company initially gained attention for its gas-piston AR designs. Today, however, it also produces direct-impingement rifles such as the P-15 BASE, intended to provide shooters with a simple and affordable AR platform.

Purpose Behind the BASE Rifle

The POF P-15 BASE Rifle was designed as a “price-point” rifle. Instead of loading it with expensive accessories or specialized components, the goal was to provide a solid base platform with essential upgrades already included.

The rifle weighs 6 pounds, 2 ounces, making it a lightweight option for a 16-inch AR-15. Its balance point sits near the forward takedown pin, giving it a natural and comfortable feel when shouldered.

Barrel and Gas System

The rifle features a 16.5-inch barrel made from 4150 chrome-moly vanadium steel.

Key specifications include:

  • Chambered in 5.56×45mm NATO
  • 1:8 twist rate
  • 5R rifling
  • Black nitride finish
  • Mid-length gas system

The 1:8 twist rate is considered an excellent all-around choice, allowing the rifle to stabilize a wide range of bullet weights.

Early AR carbines often used a carbine-length gas system, originally designed for short-barreled rifles. The mid-length system used on the P-15 BASE helps reduce recoil impulse and bolt speed, which can improve durability and overall shooting comfort.

The muzzle is threaded ½×28 and fitted with a standard A2 flash hider.

Handguard and Accessory Mounting

The barrel free-floats inside a 15-inch aluminum handguard equipped with the M-LOK interface.

The handguard includes mounting slots at:

  • 3 o’clock
  • 6 o’clock
  • 9 o’clock

These slots allow users to attach accessories such as lights, foregrips, or rail covers without adding unnecessary weight.

A continuous MIL-STD-1913 Picatinny rail runs along the top of the receiver and handguard, providing plenty of space for optics or iron sights.

Receivers and Controls

Both the upper and lower receivers are forged aluminum with a black anodized finish. The controls follow the traditional AR-15 layout and include:

  • Magazine release
  • Forward assist
  • Brass deflector
  • Standard selector switch

The bolt catch features an enlarged serrated lower section to make it easier to lock the bolt open.

The rifle ships with a GI-style charging handle, though many shooters may eventually upgrade to a larger ambidextrous design.

POF Reliability Upgrades

One of the most interesting features of the P-15 BASE is its E2 chamber fluting system, developed by Patriot Ordnance Factory.

The chamber includes four small channels that allow a small amount of gas to flow backward along the cartridge case during firing. This gas pressure helps break the seal between the case and chamber wall, reducing the force required to extract the casing.

This concept is similar to the fluted chambers used in rifles such as the Heckler & Koch HK91.

Additional reliability upgrades include:

  • NP3 roller cam pin to reduce friction in the action
  • Anti-tilt buffer tube to keep the bolt carrier properly aligned
  • Properly staked gas key and castle nut

These small enhancements help improve durability and smooth operation.

Furniture and Ergonomics

The rifle comes equipped with the Battlelink Minimalist stock produced by Mission First Tactical.

This stock was originally known for being one of the lightest AR stocks available, weighing under six ounces. Despite its lightweight construction, it includes:

  • Rubber buttpad
  • Sling attachment points
  • QD sling socket

The rifle also includes a standard A2 pistol grip and ships with a 30-round magazine from Mission First Tactical.

Range Performance

During testing, the rifle demonstrated consistent reliability and smooth operation.

One notable observation was the consistent ejection pattern, with spent cases landing in nearly the same location after each shot. Consistency like this usually indicates the rifle’s gas system and internal components are working together effectively.

Recoil was minimal, helped by the mid-length gas system and balanced design.

Accuracy testing with magnified optics showed strong results for a lightweight AR-15. One of the best groups measured 0.57 inches using 77-grain ammunition from Black Hills Ammunition.

Many loads produced accuracy well under 2 MOA, which is impressive for a rifle in this price category.

Practical Use

The rifle ships without sights or optics, allowing users to configure it to their own preferences.

During testing, the rifle was paired with an EOTech EXPS3 optic for general shooting and training drills.

With a typical 50-yard zero, shooters can expect point-of-aim impact to remain close out to roughly 250 yards, depending on ammunition.

The rifle proved capable of consistent hits on steel targets out to 300 yards with a non-magnified optic.

Final Thoughts

The POF P-15 BASE Rifle is designed as a straightforward, no-nonsense AR-15 that delivers dependable performance without unnecessary extras.

While marketed as an entry-level rifle, the inclusion of features like the E2 fluted chamber, roller cam pin, and anti-tilt buffer tube gives it capabilities typically found on more expensive rifles.

With an MSRP of $999, it offers a lightweight and reliable starting point for shooters who want a solid AR-15 platform that can easily be customized to their needs.
