J&C Armament Black Widow Mk.III: Poland’s Compact Piston-Driven PDW

Developed by Poland-based J&C Armament, the Black Widow Mk.III is a compact, piston-operated rifle platform designed for close protection, vehicle operations, and confined-space engagements. Built to interface with standard AR-15 lower receivers, it blends familiar ergonomics with a proprietary short-stroke gas system aimed at reliability and modularity.

Conceived as a modern alternative to submachine guns and traditional short-barreled rifles, the Black Widow platform reflects Poland’s growing footprint in contemporary small arms development.

A European Approach to the PDW Concept

In much of Europe, law enforcement agencies have traditionally relied on submachine guns for patrol and tactical roles. However, incidents such as the 2015 Paris attacks highlighted the limitations of pistol-caliber platforms against rifle-armed adversaries.

The Black Widow Mk.III was designed to answer that gap:

  • Intermediate rifle caliber performance
  • Compact footprint suitable for backpacks and vehicles
  • Manual-of-arms familiarity for AR users

Unlike many European designs derived from AK or AR clones, the Black Widow is an indigenous system engineered from the ground up, though intentionally compatible with AR components.

Construction & Materials

The Black Widow Mk.III is largely CNC-machined from 7075-T6 aluminum billet, with an optional Grade 5 titanium version available for slight weight reduction. Unloaded weight averages around 5.5 pounds (2.5 kg), making it notably light for a piston-driven 5.56 platform.

Pressure-bearing components utilize multiple steel alloys, including:

  • 42CrMo4 for barrels
  • Tool steels for high-stress parts

Barrels feature:

  • Chrome lining
  • QPQ (Tenifer/Melonite-style) treatment
  • 1:7 twist rate
  • ½×28 threaded muzzle with removable two-port brake

The Gas System: Compact and Adjustable

At the heart of the Black Widow Mk.III is a proprietary short-stroke gas piston system.

Key mechanical characteristics:

  • Gas valve pinned to the barrel (free-floating barrel retained)
  • Standard AR-15 rotating bolt
  • Shortened proprietary bolt carrier (no gas key)
  • Internal recoil system housed entirely in the upper receiver

Because the recoil system is self-contained, no traditional AR buffer tube is required. This allows for extremely compact stock configurations.

Four-Position Gas Valve

The adjustable gas system includes:

  1. Standard setting
  2. Adverse/high-pressure setting
  3. Suppressor/subsonic setting
  4. Gas-off mode (manual single-shot operation)

The gas-off setting allows the rifle to function as a manually cycled platform, useful for maximizing precision or reducing movement during suppressed fire.

The non-reciprocating charging handle is reversible for left- or right-handed use.

Three Variants

Regular

  • 10.3" or 16.5" barrel
  • Standard M4-type collapsible stock

Short

  • 10.3" or 14.5" barrel
  • Proprietary collapsible PDW stock

Super Short

  1. 10.3" or 11.5" barrel
  2. Ultra-compact collapsible PDW stock

The proprietary stocks attach without requiring modification to the AR lower receiver.

AR Compatibility

Despite its unique operating system, the Black Widow Mk.III maintains compatibility with:

  • Standard AR-15 lower receivers
  • AR trigger groups
  • AR magazines
  • Standard rotating bolts

Field stripping mirrors the AR-15 procedure, preserving familiarity for experienced users.

Intended Roles

The Black Widow Mk.III is positioned as a:

  • Close protection rifle
  • Compact patrol weapon
  • Vehicle-deployable carbine
  • Suppressor-ready PDW

Select-fire variants are available for military and law enforcement markets, while semi-automatic versions are offered for civilian and private security customers where permitted.

Pricing & Availability

Starting price: approximately 11,900 PLN (around €2,700 / $2,900 USD equivalent), depending on configuration.

At present, the platform is chambered in 5.56×45mm NATO, with future caliber expansions previously discussed by the manufacturer.

Final Thoughts

The Black Widow Mk.III represents a modern European interpretation of the piston-driven compact rifle. By combining AR familiarity with a self-contained recoil system and adjustable gas operation, it offers flexibility in a compact footprint.

It is not an entry-level rifle, but rather a precision-machined, niche platform aimed at users who prioritize modularity, reliability, and reduced overall length without sacrificing rifle-caliber performance.
