The Thompson TAO50 is a bolt-action .50 BMG rifle designed for extreme long-range shooting, heavy-duty performance, and modular customization.
The .50 BMG cartridge traces its roots to early large-bore military developments and was formalized as the Browning Machine Gun round during World War I. Over the decades, it has become synonymous with extreme-range capability and anti-materiel applications, from the legendary Browning M2 to modern long-range sniper systems. Testing was conducted using Hornady 750-grain A-MAX Match ammunition, a high-end factory load designed for long-range precision. At 100 yards, the rifle produced groups ranging from just under MOA to around 1.5 MOA, which is considered strong performance for a factory .50 BMG rifle.
The rifle’s action was reported to cycle smoothly, and the muzzle brake noticeably reduced recoil, making the shooting experience more comparable to smaller calibers like .308 Winchester in terms of felt impact though blast from the brake was substantial.
Long-range testing included engagements at 600 yards, 1,000 yards, and one mile. Hits were consistent at 600 and 1,000 yards, and four successful impacts were recorded at one mile, demonstrating the rifle’s capability at extreme distances when paired with proper ballistics data and shooting fundamentals.
