Choosing the right ammunition for your carry gun is just as important as choosing the gun itself. With so many loads on the market, narrowing down the best options can be overwhelming. Rather than debating what qualifies as the “perfect” carry pistol, let’s break things down into four common categories: full-size 9mms, compact/subcompact 9mms, .380 ACP pistols, and .38 Special revolvers.
More Americans than ever are carrying 9mm handguns. Expanded concealed carry laws, the cartridge’s widespread popularity, and the rise of appendix carry have all contributed to this trend. Appendix carry, in particular, makes it easier to conceal larger pistols, meaning many people are now packing handguns with four-inch (or longer) barrels and full grips.
That extra barrel length matters. Longer barrels generate higher velocities, and a full grip improves recoil control. With that in mind, full-power or +P loads often make sense in these guns.
Speer 124-grain +P Gold Dot remains one of the most proven defensive loads available. Moving at an advertised 1,250 fps, this bonded bullet holds together through common barriers like auto glass and sheet metal while still expanding reliably. It’s been trusted by major law enforcement agencies for decades for good reason.
Hornady 135-grain +P Critical Duty was engineered specifically to meet the FBI’s rigorous testing standards. At roughly 1,070 fps, it balances weight and velocity for consistent penetration—even after passing through intermediate barriers. While expansion is controlled rather than dramatic, its performance consistency earned it adoption by the FBI.
For those who prefer heavier bullets, Federal’s 147-grain HST has built a stellar reputation. At around 1,000 fps, it expands impressively often approaching .70 caliber from longer barrels while still penetrating adequately from shorter ones. It’s widely regarded as one of the most dependable 9mm loads on the market.
The snubnose revolver remains a popular carry option thanks to its simplicity and reliability. While capacity and shootability can be limitations, the right ammunition helps maximize effectiveness.
For lightweight revolvers, manageable recoil is a major consideration. Hornady Critical Defense Lite (.38 Special) uses a 90-grain bullet at moderate velocities to reduce recoil while still delivering solid expansion. For many shooters, faster follow-up shots and improved accuracy outweigh raw power.
On the other end of the spectrum is the classic 158-grain +P Lead Semi-Wadcutter Hollow Point (LSWCHP) often called the “FBI load.” Despite its old-school appearance, this soft lead hollow point expands reliably even from short barrels. Its heavier weight ensures deep penetration, and multiple manufacturers still offer versions because it continues to perform well in real-world testing.
Virtually all .380 ACP handguns have short barrels and lightweight frames, so ammunition selection is critical. Modern bullet design has significantly improved this caliber’s effectiveness compared to decades past.
Fiocchi CovertX .380 ACP (95-grain) is engineered specifically for pocket pistols. Even from barrels under three inches, it has shown consistent expansion and respectable penetrationaround 11 inches in gel while remaining easy to control.
Federal’s 99-grain HST .380 is another standout. Designed to expand at the modest velocities typical of .380 ACP, it offers dependable terminal performance. Federal also produces Hydra-Shok Deep for shooters seeking increased penetration.
For those who prefer non-traditional designs, Black Hills Honey Badger (60-grain solid copper) takes a different approach. Instead of expanding, it uses fluted geometry to create wound channels through hydraulic displacement. It offers low recoil and high velocity, and because it’s not a hollow point, it’s less susceptible to clogging through clothing.
Smaller 9mm pistols come with trade-offs. Shorter barrels mean reduced velocity, and lighter frames can increase felt recoil. While most standard 9mm defensive loads will function in these guns, some ammunition is specifically tuned for short-barreled performance.
Hornady Critical Defense is optimized for civilian defensive scenarios, where heavy barrier penetration is less likely to be needed. Lighter bullets and tailored expansion characteristics help ensure reliable performance at lower velocities. The 115-grain 9mm version typically penetrates 10–12 inches in gel while expanding to roughly .55–.60 caliber ideal performance for close-range encounters.
Fiocchi’s CovertX line was designed around short-barrel reliability. Their 124-grain 9mm load, rated at 1,115 fps, has demonstrated strong real-world performance from compact pistols. Testing from barrels under four inches shows consistent expansion and penetration in the 14-inch range right in the sweet spot for defensive use.
When running smaller guns, balancing recoil control and terminal performance is key. Loads that expand reliably at lower velocities while remaining manageable under recoil often make the most sense.
There’s no one-size-fits-all defensive round. Barrel length, firearm size, recoil tolerance, and intended use all play a role in selecting the right load. Fortunately, modern ammunition design has made today’s defensive options more reliable and effective than ever before.
