Smith & Wesson has expanded its premium M&P lineup with the Spec Series V, a fifth-generation, full-size, all-steel, optics-ready 9mm pistol. Featuring a compensated barrel, extended-capacity magazines, and premium accessories, it’s one of the most feature-packed M&P models yet.

The M&P pistol platform has been a cornerstone of Smith & Wesson’s handgun lineup since its introduction in 2006. Originally built with polymer frames, the platform has expanded over the years to include various calibers and sizes, along with the M2.0 updates that improved ergonomics, trigger performance, and internal construction.
In recent years, metal-framed M&P pistols have gained popularity, with aluminum and now steel frame variants offering increased durability, weight, and a different recoil impulse. The Spec Series V marks the first steel-framed entry in the Spec Series lineup.
The Spec Series V is a full-size M&P pistol built with a stainless steel frame and slide, both finished in a dark gray Armornite coating. Blue PVD accents on select components add a distinctive visual contrast.
The pistol is substantial in size and weight, measuring approximately 8.75 inches long, 5.8 inches tall, and weighing nearly 42 ounces unloaded. While too large for concealed carry, its weight and design make it well suited for competition, range use, and home defense applications.
The pistol features a 4.875-inch spiral-fluted, threaded barrel with a factory-installed aluminum compensator. The compensator reduces muzzle rise and improves control during rapid fire. Users can remove the compensator and install a thread protector if desired.
Slide cutouts on the top and sides expose the fluted barrel and reduce weight while adding visual appeal.
The Spec Series V includes Smith & Wesson’s C.O.R.E. optics system, allowing users to mount a wide range of red dot sights using included adapter plates.
It also comes equipped with suppressor-height tritium night sights, providing a clear sight picture in low-light conditions and compatibility with mounted optics.

The pistol uses a flat-faced Performance Center trigger with an integrated trigger safety. The trigger provides a crisp break and reduced overtravel, with an average pull weight of approximately 4.75 pounds.
Ambidextrous slide stop controls and a reversible magazine release make the pistol suitable for both right- and left-handed shooters. The extended slide stop is designed more for locking the slide than releasing it, due to the required leverage.
The Spec Series V ships with three extended 23-round magazines. A removable steel magazine well enhances reload speed and funneling, and four interchangeable backstraps allow users to tailor grip fit.
Polymer inserts at the rear and front of the grip add texture and comfort, compensating for the rigidity of the steel frame while maintaining secure handling.
Thanks to its steel frame and compensator, the Spec Series V exhibits minimal recoil and fast follow-up shot capability. The heavy weight helps stabilize the pistol during rapid fire, making it particularly appealing for competition and high-volume shooting.
Accuracy testing demonstrated strong practical performance, with improved shootability due to reduced muzzle rise and the enhanced trigger system.

As with previous Spec Series models, the pistol is sold as a premium package. Included items are:
While not designed for concealed carry, the Spec Series V is well suited for competition shooting, home defense, and enthusiasts seeking a premium full-size handgun. The Picatinny rail allows mounting of weapon lights, and the high-capacity magazines make it effective for defensive roles.

Featuring a compensated barrel, optics-ready slide, 23-round capacity, and a comprehensive accessory package, it is designed for competition and home defense rather than concealed carry.
