A Bigger Take on the Reflex Platform

Following the trend of “upsized” micro-compact pistols, FN introduced the Reflex XL as a larger, higher-capacity evolution of its original Reflex. While the standard Reflex launched as a compact concealed-carry pistol, the XL version stretches the barrel to 3.8 inches and increases magazine capacity to 15 rounds with a flush-fit magazine, plus an extended 18-round option.

This expansion reflects a broader industry shift, where manufacturers are balancing concealability with improved shootability and capacity features many shooters now demand.

FN’s Evolution in Modern Handgun Design

FN’s earlier pistols struggled to gain widespread traction due to dated ergonomics and a reliance on traditional hammer-fired DA/SA systems. That changed with the introduction of the striker-fired 509 series, which helped reposition the brand in the modern handgun market.

The Reflex line takes a different approach, using an internal hammer-fired single-action-only system rather than a striker-fired design. Visually, the Reflex XL resembles a scaled-down version of the full-size FN 509, though it remains slimmer and lighter in hand.

Design, Dimensions, and Ergonomics

Despite being marketed as a micro-compact, the Reflex XL sits firmly in the compact category. It measures roughly 6.75 inches in length and weighs just under 20 ounces unloaded, making it lightweight for its size. The pistol is offered in black or FDE finishes and includes interchangeable backstraps to fine-tune grip fit.

The extended grip frame allows a full-hand grip, improving control during recoil. The slide is slim, aiding concealment, while the overall frame remains compact enough for everyday carry with the right holster setup.

Optics-Ready and Sight System

The Reflex XL MRD comes standard with a slide cut for micro red-dot optics, supporting popular footprints like Shield RMSc and Holosun 507K. FN includes mounting screws and a cover plate from the factory.

The pistol also features high-quality iron sights, including a tritium front sight surrounded by a bright orange ring for quick acquisition, paired with a subdued black rear sight. This setup works well with or without an optic.

Controls, Frame Features, and Trigger

Controls on the Reflex XL are kept low-profile for concealed carry, including a slim slide stop, reversible magazine release, and compact takedown lever. The polymer frame includes aggressive texturing and a single-slot accessory rail for mounting compact lights.

The trigger is one of the standout features. As a single-action-only internal hammer system, it delivers a crisp and consistent break around five pounds, noticeably cleaner than many striker-fired pistols. This contributes significantly to the pistol’s shootability and accuracy.

Performance on the Range

The Reflex XL balances concealability with shootability. Compared to smaller micro-compacts, the extended grip and longer barrel make it far more comfortable and controllable, even with hotter 9mm loads. Recoil is manageable, sight tracking is easy, and accuracy potential is strong for a carry-oriented pistol.

The pistol handles closer to a full-size handgun than a micro-compact, with only reduced weight and grip thickness reminding you of its compact nature.

Why Manufacturers Are Upsizing Micro-Compacts

The rise of “XL” variants stems from a simple reality: smaller guns are easy to carry but harder to shoot well. Extending the grip and barrel improves recoil control, sight radius, and overall performance while still maintaining reasonable concealability. The Reflex XL exemplifies this trend by blending compact dimensions with near full-size handling.

Accessories, Pricing, and Market Position

The Reflex XL ships with two magazines, interchangeable backstraps, a soft carrying case, and mounting hardware for optics. While holster availability is still developing, many existing Reflex-compatible holsters will fit.

Priced above some competitors, the Reflex XL reflects FN’s premium positioning but delivers strong build quality and performance to justify the cost.
