Full Review: Dan Wesson’s DWX 9mm Pistol

The DWX from Dan Wesson Firearms is what happens when two legendary handgun designs are carefully blended into one purpose-built platform. Drawing inspiration from the ergonomics of the CZ-75 and the trigger system and controls of the Colt 1911, the DWX delivers the best traits of both without the compromises.

A Hybrid Done Right

At first glance, the DWX resembles a refined competition-ready 1911. But once in hand, the CZ-75 influence becomes unmistakable. The steel frame mirrors the CZ grip contour, complete with a deep tang cut that allows the web of the hand to nestle high and securely.

Frontstrap and backstrap checkering combine with aggressively textured anodized aluminum grip panels to create a pistol that stays planted under recoil. If the bold red grips aren’t your style, they’re interchangeable with standard CZ-75 pattern grips.

Controls are pure 1911:

  • Ambidextrous thumb safety
  • 1911-style slide stop
  • Flat aluminum trigger with crisp break

Unlike the original CZ-75’s slide-inside-frame design, the DWX uses 1911-style external slide rails. This increases slide mass, enhances grip surface, and helps moderate recoil impulse.

Performance and Shootability

Weighing 45 ounces unloaded, the DWX is intentionally substantial. That mass contributes to its remarkably soft recoil impulse for a 9mm.

The 4.95-inch barrel locks directly into the slide without a barrel bushing and features a deeply crowned muzzle. The trigger consistently breaks around 4.5 pounds, with a clean, competition-grade feel that seems lighter than the scale suggests.

Accuracy proved excellent. At 25 yards, five-shot groups routinely clustered into tight formations well within two inches.

The slide features:

  • Front and rear cocking serrations
  • Serrated top for glare reduction
  • External extractor
  • Optics-ready mounting system

The fiber optic front sight glows brightly in daylight, paired with an adjustable rear mounted to the optics plate. Installing a red dot replaces the rear sight.

The DWX ships with two 19-round magazines compatible with full-length CZ pattern tubes.

Competition-Ready with Carry Potential

Disassembly begins much like a 1911 but ends with a modular fire-control unit that simplifies maintenance and reduces the risk of losing small parts.

Given its size and weight, the DWX is ideally suited for competition use. The weight reduces recoil, the trigger enhances precision, and the 19+1 capacity provides ample ammunition for most stages.

While 45 ounces is substantial for concealed carry, with the right holster setup it remains an option for those comfortable carrying a full-size steel pistol. With two magazines and one chambered, users can carry 39 rounds of 9mm on board.
